Course Description:
This course is designed to enhance students’ English proficiency in four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, to equip the students with sufficient skills for future use of the language. Language will be treated as a cultural construct and will be taught in its proper context as such. The emphasis will be placed on the development of critical reading ability and the building up of the students’ word power. Various types of reading materials – journal and newspaper articles, essays of different subjects, and literary works – will be covered in the class. Vocabulary skills will be strengthened and introduced to the students via an appreciation of some basic linguistic concepts. The class will mainly be conducted in English with the occasional use of Chinese to explain complicated grammatical structures or concepts.
Course Objectives:
1.To cultivate the students’ critical reading ability;
2.To introduce the English language via appreciation of its
culture;
3.To increase the students’ word power;
4.To develop the students’ proficiency in linguistic analysis;
5.To familiarize the students’ with discourse structure via
writing practices;
6.To enhance the students’ oral and listening proficiency.
Course Requirements:
1. Regular attendance and class participation (10%)
2. Oral reports and team projects (20%)
3. Written assignments (compositions and book report) (20%)
4. Mid-term and final exam (50%)
